  2. Who was henrimatisse? • French artist • Was a Fauvist- meaning that they used expressive color (used color to show meaning). He was a painter for much of his career, until his aging body caused him the loss of his legs. This created his famous abstract cutouts, which he is most famous for. • Always pursued expressive color • Studied under many artist, including Piccaso during his visit to Spain. They became life long friends. • Matisse painted and drew from nature. Picasso painted from imagination. That you see in much of Matisse’s later works.

  3. Woman with a Hat by Henri Matisse, 1905 Style: Expressive Art Period: Fauvist This was the style Matisse painted in before his accident. Paintings were about color and how it told a story.

  5. Matisse after his accident • The snail • His paper cut outs were created through exploration. He believed it to be a type of sculpting, using scissors and paper. • They became more abstract (another influence from Picasso and the changing times) • He understood how elements worked together and how colors and shapes could come to life in space.
