Who was henrimatisse? • French artist • Was a Fauvist- meaning that they used expressive color (used color to show meaning). He was a painter for much of his career, until his aging body caused him the loss of his legs. This created his famous abstract cutouts, which he is most famous for. • Always pursued expressive color • Studied under many artist, including Piccaso during his visit to Spain. They became life long friends. • Matisse painted and drew from nature. Picasso painted from imagination. That you see in much of Matisse’s later works.
Woman with a Hat by Henri Matisse, 1905 Style: Expressive Art Period: Fauvist This was the style Matisse painted in before his accident. Paintings were about color and how it told a story.
While working with Picasso • Many artists find inspiration from other artists. Matisse became friends with Picasso. You can begin to see his influence on Matisse here.
Matisse after his accident • The snail • His paper cut outs were created through exploration. He believed it to be a type of sculpting, using scissors and paper. • They became more abstract (another influence from Picasso and the changing times) • He understood how elements worked together and how colors and shapes could come to life in space.
What we will be doing • Artists are influenced by each other. Much like Picasso and Matisse were to each other. We are going to take the STYLE and TECHNIQUE from Matisse to create an abstract collage that tells a story about who you are. • You must look at space of the paper. • Think about size of the letters and how they will fit on the paper • Begin to understand how size can affect communication • To understand how symbols can tell a story
Symbols • Symbols can tell a story
Think about all the different ways you can place your letters. Here they are using overlap!
