Service User and Carer/Patient and Public Involvement in HE – developing a new strategy for HLS Kim Scarborough
What’s in a name? UWE is developing a reputation for Patient and Public Involvement There are many names for the people we want to work with when teaching Health and Social Care students Many people do not like the term ‘service user’ We need a term that is acceptable internally and recognised externally We are proposing to use PPI BUT to explain who this includes e.g. Service users, cares, expert by experience etc.
The new strategy must be sustainable To know why we have involvement of the public To be clear what student need from public involvement in their education To be clear how much this involvement costs and ensure appropriate funding is available whilst being realistic about current financial constraints Time for staff to develop involvement in their professional programmes
