  1. INTD 54 estimating wallcoverings

  2. wall preparation • walls must be clean and dry—free from grease, dirt, body oils & old wallpaper • determine who will do prep • nail holes need to be filled • walls need to be smooth • unsealed walls need to be primed and sealed • determine appropriate sizing to use • paint trim before hanging wallcovering

  3. estimating materials how to measure: • use steel measuring tape—25 ft. long x ¾ in. wide—always measure in inches • measure length then width of each wall • put measurements on rough sketch/ exploded floor plan • measure windows, doors & other openings—add measurements to drawing • follow-up measure by wallpaper hanger

  4. estimating materials

  5. estimating materials estimating wallpaper: • consulting manufacturers charts— • fastest & easiest; works well for average, box-shaped rooms • strip method— • requires counting of actual strips used • chopped-up wall space, cathedral ceilings, commercial installations • square footage method— • works for almost any wall surface

  6. estimating materials estimating wallpaper: european, american-made, oriental, commercial double roll—five full strips (with 8 ft. ceiling)

  7. estimating materials American-made wallcoverings (27-inch roll) • standard formula—no pattern repeat • measure perimeter of room • multiply by ceiling height • divide by 30 • deduct 2 single rolls for every 4 ordinary openings example: room is 12 ft x 14 ft w/8 ft ceilings room has 2 windows & 2 doors 12’+14’+12’+14’ = 52’x 8’ ceiling= 416’/30 = 14 rolls deduct 2 rolls for openings = 12 rolls

  8. estimating materials European wallcoverings (20-22 inches wide) • estimate square footage, divide by 22 • more rollage is needed than when using American-made Oriental wallcoverings (36-inches wide) • estimate square footage, divide by 36 commercial wallcoverings (54-inches wide) • can be done by strip method or square footage method • sq ft method must be divided by 13.5 to convert to linear yards

  9. estimating materials pattern repeats • lengthwise/crosswise measurement of one design motif to where that same pattern is again repeated • straight—straight across match • half-drop—same height pattern motif halfway in between two other repeats • random—does not present matching problem—advisable to reverse strips for grasscloth

  10. estimating materials: rollage chart plain or solid coverings

  11. time estimating • realistic time-estimate only given after wallcovering is ordered • call paper hanger to set installation date—ask for estimate of time cost estimating • materials—vary GREATLY in cost • hanging labor— charged per roll

  12. choosing a paper hanger • have hangers in mind before you need them • range from inexpensive part-timers to seasoned professionals • get referrals from other designers • set up appointments and interviews—see their work & call past clients • always get a signed work order to avoid misunderstandings
