Vietnamese American Medical Association • History: Founded in 1989, Board of Directors: 11 members elected every 2 years and 12 Presidents of regional organizations • Purposes: Mutual support and fellowship, Education • Membership: Physicians of Vietnamese heritage who live and practice in the USA • Activities: Annual National Convention with CME, Publication, Community Health programs, Scholarship program, Social services • Current initiative: World Health Ambassador Program
Vietnamese Physicians Association in San Diego • History: Founded in 1981 • Purpose: Promote fellowship among members • Membership: Physicians of Vietnamese origin • Activities: Monthly and annual meetings , Community services • Current initiatives: - Hepatitis Prevention Project for Asian Americans in San Diego - Breast Cancer Early Detection Project for Vietnamese Americans in San Diego
Asian Pacific Health Center • History: Non-Profit Organization, founded in 2001 by a group of Health Professionals in San Diego, a VPASD partner • Mission: providing low fee services to the underserved constituents in San Diego • Services and Activities: Primary care services, Prevention Medicine, Community Services (Health Fairs) and Projects
Hepatitis B Prevention Project • Granted by: The California Endowment • Sponsors: Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals, Gilead Sciences & National Task Force for Hepatitis B • Partners: Asian Pacific Health Center, Community Health Group, Union of Pan Asian Communities (UPAC), SD Vietnamese Physicians Association • Length of project: 2 ½ years
High Prevalence of CHBV in Asian American Communities • Prevalence for Chronic HBV in US is < 2% • The prevalence of HBV is very high among API (5%-15%) • The incidence of liver cancer due to HBV is 7-13 times higher in API Americans than in white Americans • 50% of children born to HBV+ mothers in the US are Asian American. 1. www.liver.stanford.edu
Objectives • Increase community awareness of Chronic Hepatitis B • Improve the knowledge of Physicians and other Health Professionals about Hep B • Test young adolescents & high risk adults AA, immunize those who are susceptible and refer for treatment for infected persons
Goals of the project 1. Fewer hepatitis B infections among Asian Americans (AA) 2. Increased access to treatment for AA with hepatitis B. 3. Decreased health disparity for liver cancer and cirrhosis among the AA population

Breast Cancer Early Detection Project for Vietnamese Americans in San Diego • Funded by the CMA Foundation • Statement of needs: disparities of mammograms done in VA • Project partners: VPASD & APHC • Objectives: - increase awareness of the seriousness of the disease - increase of mammograms done in VA
