  2. Who made rayon? Rayon was invented around 1884 by the French chemist and industrialist Comte Hilaire Bernigaud de Chardonnet (1839-1924). Rayon was first commercially produced in 1910 by Avtex Fibers Inc. in the United States - it was called artificial silk at first, but the name was changed to rayon in 1924. SUYASH

  3. DIVAY As Rayon is obtained from Natural Polymer i.e Cellulose which is mainly obtained from Wood Pulp and then converted into soluble chemical compound so Rayon is also called Semi Synthetic Fibre

  4. WHY RAYON IS CALLED AN ARTIFICIAL SILK VANSHIKA • Rayon was made artificially and scientists were successful in making of that silk in the nineteenth century. A fiber having properties similar to that of silk was obtained by chemical treatment of wood pulp. This fiber was called rayon or artificial silk. The raw material which was used to make rayon was wood cellulose which is a natural fiber.

  5. KSHITIJ Uses Of Rayon • It is used in textile industry for making textiles. • Rayon is used for making tyre cords.

  6. It is also used for making carpets and surgical dressings. KSHITIJ

  8. Formation • Rayon is a fiber made of cellulosic material, or plant life, that is made to resemble silk. The process to manufacture begins with the wood. Once the material has been collected, the wood is ready for processing. The wood pulp is ground up and treated with sodium hydroxide. This is then dried over a period of several days. The resulting product is then mixed with liquid carbon disulfide. This becomes a very thick liquid with the approximate consistency of honey. SUYASH

  9. Disadvantage of Rayon VANSHIKA • Though rayon can withstand high temperatures without melting, it does fade when exposed to sunlight and may also deteriorate. • Some rayon is flammable, but some is made to be fire retardant. When wet, rayon may stretch, but when it is washed, it may shrink. • Rayon is not very strong and wrinkles very easily.

  12. DIVAY An Alternative To Cotton Rising cotton prices in recent times led clothing makers to begin replacing cotton with rayon in their fabrics. Rayon is quality fibre which can be used as an alternative to rayon.
