SURVEY DESIGN Transparency and Accountability Program Launch Workshop May 2 – 6, 2011 – Johannesburg, South Africa The Protea Hotel Balalaika (Sandton) May 4, 2011 11.00 -13.00 HRS
Introduction • After identifying and concretizing the problem, The major question here is “Yes I know the problem but how do I approach it? • The strategy developed to solve the problem is the Survey Design • Survey Design is a conceptual structure within which the survey is conducted • Survey Design enables the researcher to come up with solutions to solve the problem and guides him/her in various stages of the survey
Why a Survey Design? • Determining why and when any particular type of study should be chosen for a project • Making research as efficient as possible yielding maximal information with minimal expenditure of effort, time and money • Advance planning of the methods to be adopted for the data collection, analysis and dissemination in view the objectives of the research and the availability of resources (financial, human and time) • Caution: Lack of thoroughness in Survey design renders the research exercise futile.
Features of a good Survey Design • One that minimizes bias and maximizes the reliability of data • One that yields maximum information and provides an opportunity for considering many aspects of a problem Note: The question of good design relates to the purpose or objective of the Survey Problem and also with the nature of the problem to be studied Caution: One single design cannot serve the purpose of all types of Survey problems.
