Session Objectives A thought provoking session, challenging participants to undertake the following – • Recognize the value in student engagement; • Create a context for learning; • Explore the four worlds of young people; • Enhance Community Partnerships;
Definition of Engagement • To intensely involve a person or their attention; • To attract a person; • To draw somebody in; • To take part; • To actively participate; (Angus & Robertson Dictionary – 1992)
‘Preventing Potential’ • Isolation from the community; • Media and Societal influences; • Expectations; • Increased reliance on external stimuli; • Changing role of family.
Creating A Context • Teaching to be directly related to experience; • Provide the skills to transfer experience into learning; • Transfer between learning environments; • Learners to understand purpose and relevance of task; • Develop skills of reflection;

Enhancing Partnerships Recognition of the Community Partnership Triad : COMMUNITY TAFE YOUNG PEOPLE
Enhancing Partnerships • Creation of Diverse Partnerships with a range of stakeholders from community, education and corporate sectors; • Opportunity to share resources, funding, ideas, with the objective of creating positive futures for all young people; • Provide community with a sense of ‘ownership’ and responsibility;
Enhancing Partnerships • Identify and enhance existing partnerships; • Adopt a proactive approach in engaging young people; • Work extensively with Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLEN’s); • Success of LLEN’s will be determined by collaborative information sharing and the formation of strategic partnerships.
