America in 1877 • After the Civil War, America was still predominantly an agricultural nation. • Most Americans still lived on farms, a small percentage of Americans lived in cities.
Industrialization begins… • Industrialization: • 1. the large-scale introduction of manufacturing, advanced technical enterprises, and other productive economic activity into an area, society, country, etc. • 2. conversion to the methods, aims, and ideals of industry and economic activity, particularly of an area that was previously underdeveloped economically.

Industrialization creates problems • There was little to no government regulation of all of these new industries. • A lack of oversight/regulation led to: • Poor working conditions for employees • Child labor • 12-14 hour work days • Unionization was forbidden
Laissez Faire Capitalism • Laissez-Faire is a French term meaning “allow to do”. • In laissez-faire capitalism, the government stays out of commerce, allowing it to do whatever it needs to do to make a profit.
