A Water Quality Assessment of the Tigre Basin, Peru Mariana Montoya, Ph.D. Student Department of Geography and the Environment University of Texas at Austin GIS in Water Resources (Fall 2007) Final Project
Introduction • Discharge of Production Waters directly into streams and rivers for 4 decades • High Temperature, high salinity (Chloride) and toxic heavy metals • Indigenous people rely on freshwater resources from rivers and streams • 66.21% of children have lead in their blood and 98.65% have cadmium. • Local people are advocating for re-injection of Production Waters © Achuar del Peru © Achuar del Peru
Objectives • Goal: Assess the extent of the effect of discharge of Production Waters • Specific Objectives: • Who is affected by Production Waters? • How contaminants move? • Which streams are affected? © Achuar del Peru
Methods • Gather data. Create Personal Geodatabase. Analyze data for monitoring points. • Create river network and set flow direction using discharge layer. • Visualize monitoring points and communities. Analyze salinity (Cl) near communities. • Using discharge data, flow direction and salinity, determine affected streams. • Validate results with secondary information
Results • Affected rivers and streams • Affected communities • Monitoring points data not reliable for heavy metals

Conclusions • Important to explore and understand data, before starting the analysis. • Important to know exactly what needs to be done. • Avoid using GIS to analyze tables, use excel • Resulting maps should be contrasted with other available data. • GIS has an immense potential to analyze contamination in the northern Peruvian Amazon
