EU water policy • Water Framework Directive • 22 December 2009 : River Basin Management Plans adopted • 2015: achievement of good chemical and ecological status • Floods Directive • Flood risk management plans by 2015 • EU policy on Water Scarcity and Droughts • In 2012 European Commission will present a Blueprint for Safeguarding Europe’s waters • Assessment of all River Basin Management Plans • Review of strategy on Water Scarcity and Droughts • Assessment of vulnerability of water and natural resources

  3. GREEN - River Basin Management Plan established ORANGE - consultations finalised, but plans not yet published. BLUE - consultations ongoing PURPLE - consultations not started or ongoing in a part of the country RED - consultation have not yet started

  4. International Danube Plan • Finalised end 2009 • First comprehensive plan • Includes status of ‘large’ water bodies • Focus on identified significant water management issues • Joint Programme of Measures • To be read in conjunction with national plans

Key results 30 % of Danube water bodies in good status 40 % of Danube water bodies is heavily modified Organic pollution: significant reduction due to construction of Urban Waste Water Treatment Plants – but more efforts needed Nutrient pollution: significant reduction (see above), but load to Black Sea remain 40% above 1960 level – limitation of P in detergents is cost-effective measure Hydromorphology: 10 % of flood plains with reconnection potential reconnected in 2015, 15 % of continuity interruptions will be addressed by 2015 112 future infrastructure projects are reported to be constructed in the coming years

Key elements for follow-up Use the information and building blocks in the River Basin Management Plans Take aquatic environment into account in future infrastructure projects for navigation, hydropower, flood protection Focus on river basin wide fish migration, e.g. sturgeon Apply Joint Statement on Inland Navigation and Environmental Protection Ensure that current and future agriculture developments are in line with integrated river basin management approach Take future climate changes into account
