Scientists began to try to increase the amount of penicillin produced by P. C. bacteria, by irradiating it with X-rays and UV rays in order to induce mutations of this species. They succeeded and developed a mutant that produced 1000 times the amount of penicillin than Fleming’s original culture
How is biotechnology used for good? • To make genetically modified food • In 2008, New Zealand researchers developed a tear-free onion through gene-silencing technology. • In 2008, American researchers developed a biotech carrot with 41 percent more calcium than conventional carrots.
