The Compass 指南針 One of the Four Greatest Chinese Inventions By: Chuen-Xi Quek
The First • First magnetic compass probably dates back to Qin Dynasty (221-206BC) • Spoon-shaped or Big Dipper shaped object made of lodestone or magnetic ore placed in the middle of a bronze plate.
The compass always pointed south, instead of north. • The square base represent earth, and the circular plate represent heaven. • At first not used as compass but as feng shui or geomancy before being used as navigation.
Chinese marked the 8 main directions (north, east, west, south, northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest) • As well as 24 direction based on the constellations. • Also 28 lunar mansions based on constellations dividing the Equator.
Zheng He from the Yunnan province of China was the first person recorded to have used the compass as a navigational device. He used it in his seven ocean voyages between 1405 and 1433.
In Europe… • 一一九0 歐洲第一次看到指南針. • The compass came to the Arab world and Europe between 960 and 1127. • 沒有指南針, 航行用極星,月和太陽. • The compass gave a constant bearing, and made navigation safer. This opened up the oceans for exploration and led to the discovery of the New World
Why Compass Is an Important Invention? “Francis Bacon said in his book 'The New Instruments', that paper, gunpowder and the compass reshaped the world.”
