1. Cellular organization • All organisms are made of small building blocks called cells. • Cells are the basic units of structure and function in organisms. • Organisms my be composed of only one cell or of many cells. a. Only one cell organism: Unicellular organism. b. Many cells organism: Multicellular organism. • Every cell is specialized to do its own work.
2. The chemicals of Life • The cells of living things are made of chemicals. • There are many types of chemicals. a. The most abundant chemical in cells is water. b. The building materials of cells are proteins and lipids. c. The genetic material of cells are nucleic acids.
3. Energy use • Organisms need energy to grow, repair injured parts, and etc. • Organisms get energy from taking in and breaking down materials. • The combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials is called metabolism.
4. Response to surroundings • All organisms react to changes in their environment. • A change in an organism’s surroundings that causes the organism to react is called a Stimulus (plural Stimuli). • Stimuli include changes in light, sound, and other factors. • An organism shows an action or a change in behavior as a reaction to a stimulus.
5. Growth and development • All living things grow and develop. • Development is the process of change that occurs during an organism’s life, producing a more complex organism. • Organisms use energy and make new cells while they are ‘developing’ and ‘growing.’
6. Reproduction • Living organisms have the ability to reproduce, or produce offspring that are similar to the parents. • There are commonly two different ways of reproducing. a. Asexual reproduction: Only one parent (identical). b. Sexual reproduction: Two parents (different).
