CINAHL:Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature • Subjects: nursing, allied health, biomedicine, alternative medicine, and consumer health. • Indexes books, dissertations, conference proceedings, book chapters, journals, etc. • Includes 2,960 journals – over 597 in full text (July ‘09). • PDF backfiles to 1981 are also included. • Searchable by keyword, controlled subject heading, or citation linking (2000 to present).   9. Building and Saving Searches: Search History/Alerts • Return to previous search • Refine previous search • Combine searches • Save searches to run later and/or to have email updates sent automatically • Print out record of searches performed • Put in a personal database NC LIVE / JSK

  14. Advanced Searching: CINAHL Headings • Controlled subject headings denote “aboutness” of an article/book/etc. • Help find articles on a topic regardless of words used in title/abstract • Allows for the option to cover multiple terms • Allows for more precision with subheadings NC LIVE / JSK

Browsing for CINAHL Headings • Click “CINAHL Headings” button • Browsing menu: suggest Relevancy Ranked option • Also could use Term begins with or Term contains – these match vocabulary not meaning • Can choose heading straight from results • Hyperlink to more information about heading • Click on heading to see subheadings NC LIVE / JSK

CINAHL Heading Record • Shows location of term on the “tree” • MUST explode term to get narrower terms • Major concept = main point of the article • Specific subheadings (nursing, therapy, etc.) • Process: select options desired, then select the proper Boolean option, and “Add.” NC LIVE / KTLV

Let’s Practice! • Using the same nursing case that we had before (interventions school nurses can use to help prevent student obesity), let’s try some of our more advanced search techniques. • What are the best subject headings for this search? • What are some secondary headings related to them that might also be helpful? Searching by Cited References • Now a feature in most EBSCO databases • Search forward and backward in scholarly time by tracing items in bibliographies • Finds articles that are similar because of citation links rather than keywords – like genealogy! • Find these by browsing OR by searching NC LIVE / JSK

  20. Cited Reference Browsing • Start with results from a standard search. • Some have a “Times Cited in this Database” link • Links to articles whose bibliographies are known • 3 Options: • Cited references (parents) • Citing articles (children) • Related records (cousins) NC LIVE / KTLV

  21. Cited Reference Searching • Tab on the Advanced Search Menu • Form to enter information about starting article • CINAHL searches for citing articles as default; can move to parents & cousins from here. NC LIVE / KTLV

Saving Results: The Folder • Click the “Add to Folder” icon next to an article to temporarily save it within the database • These are remembered in further searches in one session • Click “Folder has Items” to see saved articles • Can print/save/email individual articles • Also can save/email entire searches and collections of articles using MyEBSCOhost NC LIVE / JSK

  23. Let’s Practice! • You probably found a few good articles for the obesity case that we’ve been using. • Now let’s build our results set by finding articles that cite one or more of those, and/or are “related” to them. NC LIVE / JSK

Metasearching Nursing Databases • Choose “Databases” tab (top of screen) • Gets to list of all available databases in EBSCO • Click boxes next to databases of interest • CINAHL, Pre-CINAHL, Health Source: Nursing, PsycInfo, Health Source: Consumer • Click “Continue” to get to search • Only keyword searching is available • Limits break out by database NC LIVE / KTLV

  32. What Have We Learned? • CINAHL is the primary database for clinical and academic literature in nursing and allied health • CINAHL’s limits, subject headings, and journals indexes allow for powerful searching • Cited article searching presents an added method for finding articles NC LIVE /JSK

  33. What Else Have We Learned? • About20% of journals in CINAHL are available with some full text • Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition is also an option for nursing information • You can search multiple EBSCO databases at once to expand options NC LIVE / KTLV
