FLOWCHART ILLUSTRATING APPROVAL PROCEDURE FOR NEW AND RENEWING GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES • Teach • course receives Gen Ed status until next review cycle. • update catalog • schedule Approved • Faculty Senate • vote to accept course for Gen Ed credit Approved • Faculty Senate Executive Committee • verifies proposal readiness and forwards to Faculty Senate Approved – unanimously on first review, or simple majority on subsequent review Recommendation • University Curriculum Committee • reviews course content, relationship with other courses, and extent to which the course addresses Gen Ed intended learning outcomes. • does not assess learning. • University General Education Improvement and Assessment Committee • as required, reviews courses with respect to Gen Ed intended learning outcomes and recommends action by Curriculum Committee. • oversees review and modification of core- and breadth-area Gen Ed intended learning outcomes as needed based on Gen Ed course reviews. Approved – not unanimous Proposal to grant or renew course Gen Ed status Informal consultation as needed • Department • develops proposal. • consults with University General Education Improvement and Assessment Committee regarding Gen Ed intended learning outcomes (informal). • gathers all required signatures.
