Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa • Born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria where he lived until he died. • He earned his education at Government College, Umuahia, and University of Ibadan. • He taught at University of Lagos. • He began to focus on his literary career in 1973 after acquiring many other jobs. • He was a Nigerian writer and Environmental Activist who spoke against the corruption of Nigerian society among other issues.
Contributions • In 1992, he broadened the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People. • Criticized the destructive impact of the oil industry and Shell suspended their operations on Ogoni lands due to his protest. • Saro-Wiwa was arrested and hanged for alleged complicity in the murders of 4 Ogoni chiefs at a political rally. • His family filed a lawsuit and Shell gave a settlement of $15.5 million to his family to resolve the issue.
