Confucius • China’s most influential scholar was Confucius. • Born 551 BC, lived during the Zhou Dynasty’s decline. • He had a deep desire to restore order and moral living to China. • Confucius believed that social order could be attained if society was organized around five basic relationships. • His words were collected by his students in a book called Analects.

  3. Confucius’ Five Basic Relationships • 1. Ruler and Subject • 2. Father and Son • 3. Husband and Wife • 4. Older Brother and Younger Brother • 5. Friend and Friend • Confucius stressed children should practice filial piety.

Qin Dynasty- Shi Huangdi • Replaced the Zhou in the third century. 240 BC • Shi Huangdi- “First Emperor” • Halted internal battles, stopped invaders, doubled the size of China. • Moved noble families to where he could watch them. • To prevent criticism, the prime mister murdered hundreds of Confucius scholars. “Useless” books were burned.

Qin Dynasty • Program of centralization • Built a highway network of more than 4,000 miles. • Set standards for writing, law, and currency. • Irrigation projects/increased farm production. • The Great Wall of China • Fall of the Qin • When Shi’s son took over, peasants rebelled.202 BC. • Han Dynasty took over.
