Our Beautiful Sun Chapter 3.2 – the sun: our very own star7th science
Corona: The Sun’s Outer Atmosphere Chromosphere: Thin region below the corona only 30,000 km thick. • Photosphere: Visible part of the Sun that we can see from Earth. • Convective Zone: Region about 200,000 km thick where gases circulate. • Radiative Zone: Very dense region about 300,000 km thick – WOW, THAT’S THICK! • Core: At the center of the Sun where the Sun’s energy is produced. The structure of our sun:
The 6 layers of our Sun: LAYERS OF OUR SUN:
Your Turn: Label our Sun: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Layers of our sun:
At first, some thought that burning fuel was the source of the sun’s energy. Others thought the sun was shrinking and that’s where our solar energy came from. Who was right? Energy production in our sun:
Sorry to say that “Burning or Shrinking” was not the right theory. The ANSWER: NUCLEAR FUSION What is Nuclear Fusion: Hydrogen and Hydrogen fuse together to form Helium and WALA – ENERGY IS PRODUCED! HYDROGEN – HYDROGEN = HELIUM NUCLEAR FUSION
Sunspots: cooler, darker spots of the photosphere of our Sun. Solar Flares: Areas of extremely high temperature that when enough energy builds up they VENT into the atmosphere. Similar to a Volcano building up with gases and then EXPLODES. A GIGANTIC ERUPTION ON THE SUN! SOLAR ACTIVITY
QUIZ: 1. How old is our Sun? 2. List all 6 parts of our Sun. 3. What is Nuclear Fusion? 4. What is a Sun Spot? 5. What is a Solar Flare? Our sun is truly amazing!
