Our Star… • is a medium sized star • is the closest star so it looks larger than any other star. • There are other stars in the universe that are much larger.
Source: the place where something begins or comes from. • Most of the energy on Earth comes from the sun. • The sun is made of very hot gases. • Mostly hydrogen gas
Sunspot: A cool spot on the sun’s surface that occurs for a short time. • A sunspot appears as a shadow or dark spot on the sun.
Solar Flare: An eruption of flame off of the sun’s surface. • A large amount of energy is released from the sun’s surface at one time.
Solar Energy: energy from the sun • Plants use solar energy to make food. • Solar energy has been stored for millions of years in fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas • Solar energy heats the Earth.
Wind: moving air Warm air rises Cooler air moves in to replace the warm air Sun’s energy heats The surface of the Earth and surrounding air. Earth’s Surface
