Galileo • Keywords can vary, have alternatives • Go straight to “advanced search” • Move from subject, to database, to journal • Go in through Library Website. • Avoid Full Text • Stick with the last 10 years • Stick with peer-reviewed journals for most part • Not everything is available • Start searching before the last minute
Advanced Search Functions Yes No Yes Last 10 years
Search Results Gauge results Use to find full text elsewhere in the library Use helpers to narrow or expand search
Using ERIC • Eric has good subject indexes • The most useful ways to limit searches are: • Educational level • Publication Type • Peer Reviewed • use this with caution (can be too limiting) • Take advantage of the thesaurus • Ex. ‘Student affairs’ could be called ‘student personnel services’
Using Education Research Complete • Different subject indexing than ERIC • Better for keyword searching • Uses strings & longer phrases than ERIC • Can’t limit by educational level
Using Google Scholar • No subject searching but powerful in other ways • Access from UGA Library Website • Under “Search Tools” • Will ask you for the GALILEO Password • Limit by date for better results
Google Scholar Citation Setup Click on the gear at the top right corner Choose Scholar Preferences
Change Bibliography Manager Change this box to either EndNote or RefWorks depending on what citation manager you use.
What is Citation Management? • “Citation management is a web-based or computer-based system that allows you to collect, sort, annotate and group references you find. When you wish to include references in your papers, a citation management system will output selected references within the text and create a bibliography at the end using a style you choose (APA, Chicago, JAMA, MLA, Turabian, etc.).”
EndNote vs. RefWorks • EndNote • A program you must install on your computer • A bit more powerful than RefWorks • Useful for storing PDFs on your computer • RefWorks • Web-based—can access from anywhere • A bit more user friendly than EndNote • Write-N-Cite IV coming soon*
RefWorks Set-up • Go to www.my.uga.edu • Log in using your MyID and click on the UGA Libraries tab • Find the box titled “Research & Writing” • Use the group code: RWUGeorgiaLib • Set up your individual account • See PDF for more detailed set-up instructions
Downloading EndNote All UGA Barcodes start with 627541810… Choose X5 version for Mac or Windows Follow program install directions
EndNote Configuring • Under Edit >Preferences: • Find Full Text: • Check all the boxes • Open URL Path: http://www.galileo.usg.edu/sfx_uga • Authenticate with URL: • http://www.galileo.uga.edu/welcome • URLs and Links: • OpenURL Argument: ?sid=ISI:endnote&aufirst=AUFIRST&aulast=... • [change just the part in red, which will be WoS to begin with.]
