Research Process- Step #5 • How do I make a fact card (white index card, p. 15 in handout)? • Take the information you hi-lighted and write it on a white index card • Put the information into your own words . . . . PARAPHRASE

Can you just copy what you hi-lighted onto a fact card (white index card)? • NO • You MUST paraphrase it, which means putting the information into your own words.
The Purpose of these slides is to learn… • How to put a passage in your own words without changing the meaning • How to find the main idea of the text in order to paraphrase it
What is Paraphrasing??? • PARAPHRASING IS… • Used to rewritethe text in your own words • Used to clarifymeaning • Used to shortena longer statement but keep the main ideas • Used to avoid PLAGIARISM.
What is NOT Paraphrasing - Changing a couple of words. - Deleting a couple words or phrases. - Rearrangingthe order of the words.
So How Do We Do It? • Readthe passage carefully • Decide the main ideasof the passage • Identifyimportant words or phrases • Put the main points in your own words PARAPHRASE ME!
Paraphrasing Activity • In 1957, Martin Luther King & other black ministers helped found the SCLC. • Malcolm X had become a Black Muslim, a group that believed in separation of the races.
Research Process- Step #5 • Find Citable Information • Statistics, quotes, speeches, specific details from an event, etc . . . • Two to three per body paragraph = 5 to 10 fact cards that are taken word for word. • Then label CITE on the fact card. The word CITE will not appear in your paper.
Research Process- Step #5 • Information that is going to be cited in your paper does NOT have to be paraphrased but you should write "cite" on the card and write down the author's last name and page #. • Smartboard example
Time To Research • Where are the articles located & supplies? • Only take one article at a time . . Source #1, Source #2 . . . Go in order • Remember the steps in the research process . . . You must follow them. • When you are done with the source put it in your folder and take another one. • This is NOT a group activity . . . Testing Environment
Homework • Finish source #1 • People going on the art trip tomorrow need to finish three sources by Thursday, so take home two sources and blank index cards.
