I. The Reformation in Europe • Martin Luther- published an attack on Catholic church corruption -founds the Lutheran Church • Protestant Reformation- reforming the church
I. The Reformation in Europe (Ctd.) • John Calvin- congregations should choose their own elders and ministers • Settlers in America share this idea
II. The Reformation Changes England • Anglican Church- church of England • King Henry VII- head of Anglican Church • Church splits away from Catholic church, still uses rituals
II. The Reformation Changes England (Ctd.) • Puritans- purify Anglican church of all Catholic elements • King James refuses to let Puritans reform the church • Puritans come to America to practice their religion
III. Economic Reasons for Interest in America 1. Enclosure movement- English nobles converted large estates into sheep farms • Poor tenants were left unemployed, America offers hope for new opportunities 2. England needs new market for wool
III. Economic Reasons for Interest in America 3. Joint stock companies- pooled the money of many investors to raise large amounts of money for big projects • Allows English merchants to be able to trade with and colonize new parts of the world without gvt. financing
IV. England needs naval outposts • Privateers- privately owned ships licensed by the gvt. to attack ships of other countries • Queen Elizabeth allows English privateers to attack Spanish ships • Establish naval bases in American colonies • Sir Walter Raleigh- names Virginia after Queen Elizabeth and founds Roanoke
V. Jamestown • First permanent English settlement in America • Virginia Company- given a charter by the king to plant colonies
V. Jamestown (Ctd.) Problems • Location- swampy, malaria 2. Townspeople unsuited for farming, raising livestock, and hunting 3. Governing council argued & couldn’t make decisions 4. Upper-class gentlemen refused to work at all
V. Jamestown (Ctd.) Result of problems • Lawlessness • Sickness • Food shortages • Colonists starve to death
V. Jamestown (Ctd.) • John Smith- strong leader who traded with Indians which helped to keep colonists alive • Pocahontas- saved John Smith from being killed by Indians
VI. Tobacco saves Jamestown • John Rolfe- introduced tobacco to Jamestown • Tobacco planted in large quantity and sold to England for a good profit
VII. House of Burgesses • House of Burgesses- first legislative body in America • Colonists could propose their own laws • Burgesses- representatives
