SOME RECENT LIFT INCIDENTS • 18.06.2013:- Nine people had a narrow escape when the cables of an elevator at New Delhi House in Barakhamba Road snapped and Lift plummeted four floors down the shaft. • 11.10.2013:- Four persons trapped in a lift in the Silver Tower complex in Sector 18, Noida. They took elevator for the 11th floor, but the lift suddenly stopped between third and fourth floors. • 20.10.2013:- Family gets stuck in Lift for 2 hours in a Hotel in Sector – 26, Noida. The family took the Lift which got stuck between Ground Floor and First Floor and then slipped to Basement.
GROWTH IN LIFTS • Annual Growth Rate in Lifts Sale is 12 – 13 % Based on Data of a leading Lift Manufacturer
REASONS FOR GROWTH IN USE OF LIFTS • With rapid Urbanization and due to limited land space, Vertical growth has increased. • Need of Vertical Transportation has increased • Solutions are:- • Lifts – Escalators, • Both Solutions have their merits & demerits.
CHALLENGES FOR METRO SYSTEM • Street level, Concourse and Platform are at different Heights (Vertical levels). • Heavy Usage of the provided facilities, • Continuous operation for 20 hrs X 365 days, • Variable levels of Commuter Understanding • Vandalism / Mishandling of the components. Safety of Commuters is Paramount.
APPLICABLE STANDARDS STANDARDS FOR LIFTS • IS – 14665: All parts (Latest Version). • IS – 15785: Installation and Maintenance of lifts without Conventional machine rooms • IS – 15330: Installation and Maintenance of lifts for Handicapped Persons – Code of Practice. • EN 81 – 1: Safety rules for construction & installation of electric lifts.
As per EN 81, Persons to be safeguarded are :- a) users; b) maintenance and inspection personnel; c) persons outside the lift well, the machine room and pulley room (if any).

Safeties for persons outside the Lift • 3D full height curtain of light in the car door, • Full Fascia plate for the car of 750mm
SAFETY FEATURES FOR MAINTENANCE & INSPECTION IN LIFT PIT • Pit ladder = Height of Pit + 1250 mm. • Two Pit switches – In Pit adjacent to Pit ladder. One at 500mm from pit level & other at 1200mm from the bottom most landing.

SAFETY FEATURES ON CAR TOP • Car Top Inspection Box – Stop switch • Inspection drive – When Lift is in Inspection Drive Mode, it can be moved with limited speed by pressing inspection drive buttons. Lift moves only till Button is pressed. • Blocking Device – During maintenance / inspection work on machines, these blocking devices are used. This will stop movement of car both Mechanically & Electrically.

FURTHER STEPS BY DMRC • Lift & Escalator Cell in DMRC (O&M). • Some equipment being maintained in house. Result:- • In depth analysis of accidents & component failures • Valuable inputs provided to Manufacturer for action, • Performance requirements in Tender Specifications upgraded.
FEEDBACK REGARDING LIFTS ACCIDENTS Total 3 (Three) Accidents all in Phase -1 Lifts: Object stuck between Door & Door Frames. Solution:- Door Profile fixed to reduce gap. As per EN81-1:1998, “to avoid dragging of children hands, automatic power operated horizontally sliding doors made of glass shall be provided with means to minimize the risk such as: • Reducing coefficient of friction between hands and glass • Sensing the presence of fingers”
FINGER PROFILE FOR ELEVATOR DOORS: • When the gap between car door and car entrance panel or between landing door and entrance frame is above 5mm, finger profile is provided to minimize the gap.

PASSENGER TRAPPING • Passenger Trapping is :- When Lift gets stuck between floors with Passengers inside. • 21 % of Man traps were due to Door Problems. • A solution being worked out is Landing Door By Pass with Lift Manufacturer.
Landing Door Bypass unit The Lift starts only when Car door & Landing door are closed Mechanically & Electrically. Subsequently, if the door contact gets stuck or disturbed, the software will run the lift in slow speed (approximately 0.3 m/s) with an Audio & Visual indication till it reaches the nearest landing & the doors will open.

COMPONENT FAILURES • Based on Annual usage / operations, Lifts have been divided into three categories:- Category – A :- above 5 lakhs, Category – B :- 2.5 lakhs to 5 lakhs, Category – C :- below 2.5 lakhs, Accordingly Predictive Replacement Plans for components (like Batteries, Electronic cards, rollers, etc) finalised with OEMs to mitigate sudden failures & improve safety.
UPGRADING PERFORMANCE REQT. For Phase – 3 Elevators :- • Lifts to be designed for One Million operations/ Year • Doors to be suitable for 4 Million Operations/ Year Design is in progress and it is observed that Elevator Door manufacturers have different door models / products based on Number of Door Operations (duty cycle) required. Leading Elevator door manufacturers are – Fermator, Spain Wittur, Germany Sematic, Italy
CRITICAL DOOR COMPONENTS Based on inputs from Elevator door manufacturers, selection of following components depends on Duty Cycle:- • Track thickness and profile, • Diameter of Door Rollers, (> 60 mm) • Synchronisation rope, (min 3.0 mm) • Door contacts, (IP 20 / 54 / 67) • Door guide shoes / sliders. Manufacturers advised to submit Endurance Test Reports and prepare Predictive Replacement Plan.
WAY FORWARD • CLIENT should be Vigilant & Demanding, • Developing Facilities for Testing and Certification of sub-systems / components. • Quality Control during Installation, • Periodic Maintenance • Strengthening of Legal Framework.
