The Iriquois • Tribe: group of families bound together under a single leadership • The 5 tribes who came together were: • Seneca • Cayuga • Onondaga • Oneida • mohawk
The Iriquois • Around 1580 these tribes came together to create the Iriquois League. • What is a league? • Organization that people form which unites them for a particular purpose. • The five tribes sent 50 representatives to a Great Council that made decisions for the league as a whole.
The Iriquois • The Iriquois Trail linked the lands of the League • They lived in the Eastern Woodlands cultural region • Cultural region: an area in which people with similar cultures live.
Living in the Woodlands • The Iriquois lived in a longhouse, which was a building used for shelter. It could be as long as 150 ft and they were each divided into living areas for as many as 12 families. • They used the woodlands for food and clothing as well.
Belief and Customs • They felt a deep connection to the animals, trees, and other resources • If a hunter killed a deer he first knelt before it and thanked it for the food and clothing it would give to his family before he began to skin it • At harvest they gave thanks for their crops • Wampum was highly valued by the Iriquois as well
The Iriquois Today • There are about 50,000 Iriquois today • Many live on reservations • What’s a reservation? • Land set aside by the US government for Native Americans • Fifty members still form the Great Council
