Purpose of the Project • The purpose of this professional development project is to prepare a research-based presentation about Web 2.0 technology, as well as why and how they can be used to support teaching and learning in the K-12 classroom.
Learning Outcomes By the end of this presentation, each workshop participant will be able to: • Know where to find Web 2.0 tools • Demonstrate knowledge of some Web 2.0 tools • Acknowledge the benefits of Web2.0 tools • Identify some Web 2.0 Tools currently available for educators • Discuss how Web 2.0 tools can be used in the classroom

Learners have changed • Learners today are not the same learners from previous generations • Net Generation of technologically savvy individuals • Plugged in everywhere, except the classroom “Our students have changed radically. Today’s students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach.” - Marc Prensky Prensky, M. (2001). Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants.
What is Web 2.0? “Web 2.0 is defined as an online application that uses the World Wide Web (www) as a platform and allows for participatory involvement, collaboration, and interactions among users. Web 2.0 is also characterized by the creation and sharing of intellectual and social resources by end users” (Lemke, Coughlin, Garcia, Reifsneider, and Baas, 2009).
Why Use Web 2.0 in Education? • Leads to higher level of engagement with students • Differentiated instruction – help to reach different learning styles • Simulates real-world experiences • Develops critical thinking skills • Creates lifelong learning skills • Alternative Learning environments • Extends learning beyond the school day
Benefits of web 2.0 tools • A great way to make learning more interactive • Allow the teacher to interact with each student and students with each other. • Develop students into technology savvy graduate that are in demand in the global workplace. • Engage net generation learners “Teachers can use Web 2.0 tools to captivate students, to hold their attention, and to enhance their learning experiences.” - Yuen et al. (2011)
Impact of Web 2.0 on Education • School districts all across the United States have begun the push for more integration of Web 2.0 tools and other ICT into the classrooms. • The invention of the Internet and the Web are “introducing opportunities and motivation for transforming the conditions of learning; how we view learning, and how we can shape our educational practice to better support learning (Harasim, p. 29, 2012).”
