  6. Schedule • Last week • Review Folders and Files in Windows Explorer. • Edit Text (Using Notepad). Backspace, Delete, Arrow keys, highlighting text, Copy and Paste, Cut and Paste • Explore Word 2010 • Tonight • Explore the Internet using Internet Explorer

  8. Review • What’s a keyboard shortcut for “Copy”? • What’s a keyboard shortcut for “Cut”? • To me it looks like a scissors.  • What’s a keyboard shortcut for “Paste”? • To me it looks like an arrow (^).

  9. Review • To highlight (or select) text, hold down the _____ key and use arrows. • What two keys offer an alternative to scrolling up and down? • What happens when you press Windows key + E?

  11. “Super Secret #1” • Whenever you have the question, "How do I.....?" 95% of the time the answer is “Right-click.“ • The drop-down menu provides relevant choices as a courteous shortcut for you.

  12. “Super Secret #2” • CTRL + Z: Live it, know it, breathe it.  If you mess up, delete something accidentally, or generally 'screw up', press “Ctrl + Z" to UNDO.  • (The opposite is "Ctrl + Y" to REDO.)

  13. “Super Secret #3” • Know Your Tools!!! • Take 10 minutes (JUST 10 minutes!) to float your mouse over your toolbar buttons and read the name of the tools.  • If you still have no idea what it is, just type the name into the "Help" box (top right of most software programs) and you will get complete instructions on how to use that tool.

  14. “Super Secret #4” • Tools, Options. Go there in any software program and explore.  You will find out how much control you really have over your computer.  It's awesome! • What is a “default”? The standard setting unless you change it. You can set your own preferences in “Options”.

  17. The Internet vs. The Web • Internet is like Infrastructure • Think of phone lines, switching stations, computers • Web is all the individual places that tap into the Internet • Think of people calling your home phone to get in touch with you, find out information, purchase something...

  18. What is a hyperlink (link)? • A “pointer” to take you to a new location. • Can be another place on the same page. • Can be another place on the same web site. • Can be another web site • Can be an icon or underlined words

  23. Internet Explorer - Favorites • Ways to organize: • Drag and Drop the Favorites to change their order • “Organize Favorites” is a choice under “Add to Favorites”

  24. Internet Review • Open Internet Explorer (the blue “e” with agold halo) • Locate these items: • The menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc.) • The “Back” button • Favorites. (Click the word and see the list of favorite web sites.) • The “search” box on the top right of the page. (Click the dropdown arrow to see different search providers.)

Designing a Web Site • What do I want to share? • How can I categorize the information? • People can sort through no more than 7-10 choices. • Name the categories so your readers understand • How can users navigate the site? • Don’t make them press the BACK button too much. • Let them know where they are. (Show breadcrumbs.) • Make it obvious when there is information below the “fold” of the page.

Using bing or google to search • Use bing or Google “search” to find answers to these questions. • Go to amazon.com and use the “search” to find the book “The Red Badge of Courage.” Are used copies available? • Go to bestonlinecoupons.com and see if there are Halloween costumes on sale. • Go to dpchallenge.com and view some photos in a competition.

Preparing for E-mail • Choose an account name • An email address says a lot about the person who owns it. • Give your address some thought. • If you ever plan to use it formally for job search, don’t be flippant. • You can use more than one email address. This way, you can have different names for different activities or levels of professionalism. • Try to avoid underscores and dashes.

  47. Read e-mail • Double-click a message to see the full text. • Conversations (threads).

  48. Prevent unwanted mail • Junk Mail • Filters and reporting • Safe and blocked senders • Spam • Your e-mail provider suspects this might be bothersome mail. • It might be something you want to receive, such as confirmation of the shipping of an order.

  49. Attachments • Receive • View it now • Save it to My Documents or My Pictures • Send • Search for the photo or document in your folders. • Consider the size of the attachment. Photos of 5 MB might be too large for some people to receive.

  50. Contacts • Contact information • E-mail address(es) • Phone(s) and Fax • Address(es) • Notes • Import contacts (from a file) • When you get an e-mail from someone new, you can “add to contacts” list. • Create“groups” or “categories” for distribution lists.
