Ch 1 Quiz • How did the boys end up on the island? • Which character do we meet first? • Name the three characters who go exploring on the island. • Who is voted leader? • What physical illness does Piggy have? Hint: it’s not that he’s a larger guy. • What is the “scar” in the jungle?
Journal on Ch. 1 Allegory: a story that conveys ideas and themes through symbolic characters and objects. Ralph: (22) Jack: (31) Symbolizes humans’ instinct to gratify one’s immediate desires, act violently to obtain supremacy over others, and enforce one’s will. • Symbolizes humans’ instinct to live by rules, act peacefully, follow moral commands, and value the good of the group. Top of 28: who do you think would suggest they launch the bolder off of the top of the cliff by saying, “Come on” (Golding 28). Why that character?
Journal Continued . . . • Symbolizing innocence: choosing not to kill a pig. No kills, no blood, still feel compassion for others and animals (31), so Jack still has some innocence in ch 1. • Chapter 2 Prep: Signal Fire: • The boys will light a signal fire to attract notice for rescue. When they think it’s important to keep it lit, it symbolizes they want to return to society and all its rules. • When they no longer think the signal fire is important, it symbolizes that they no longer want to return to society. They prefer their savage ways on the island.

Ch 2 Vocab Errant: Roving in search of adventure, or wandering outside of the established limits. • The errant littl’uns ran away from the group. POS: adjective
