Training • 75 hours of minimum training of state approved program is required to be eligible for the certification exam. • This requirement of training varies from state to state but normally it takes about 4 – 6 weeks of training before the certification exam.
Duties and Responsibilities • The most important functions or you can say the formal duties of a CNA include taking vital signs, feeding patients, making bed, bathing, moving patients and grooming. • Taking training programs will help you perform these duties efficiently and effectively.
Patient Rights for CNA to be Aware of • A nursing assistant should be well aware of the patient rights and should respect them to avoid any inconvenience and patient complaints. • Patient rights are different for hospitals, nursing homes and other health care center but the following basic rights are all the same for everyone.
Information • Patients have the right to know the information about any treatment that is about to take place or any other information about their stay in the health care center. • Patients should know the whole procedure, the identity of doctors and workers involved, the time taken and the cost of procedure • patient has the right to refuse the treatment if they want to.
Complaints • If there is any problem in the any treatment or care, the patients have the right to complain or give suggestions regarding any concern. • They should be given a proper and fair response to their complaint and if at any time they feel like their complaint is not being handled properly, they can always register that complain to the state.
Participation • Patients have the right to make their own decision about concerning their health. They can change their minds about any treatment or service that they might not want. • CNA should file the patients refusal to the concerning doctor or the Registered Nurse (RN). • They can also get their own advance directive, a living will or health care power of attorney.
Privacy • While providing care to the patient, they have the right to keep the process confidential and only those who are required to have the information should be told. • Patients have the right to visit their friends and family in private, have private conversations on telephone and receive emails. • They can also practice their own religion in the care center privately.
Respect • It is the right of a patient to get respect and consideration from their nurses and receive care without discrimination of race, gender, culture, age or any physical disability. • No matter how much a patient makes you feel aggressive or annoy you, you must never at any point abuse them for any reason. • They can also keep possession of their personal belongings and it is the duty of a CNA to protect and respect their belongings.
Quality Care • Patients have the right to be treated the same as any other individual with as much care as possible. • They should be kept safe from any harm or injury during the care and should be made to perform physical activities and regular exercises • Even if they cannot pay most of their bills, patients should be given the same quality care as all the others.
