  3. Compromise of 1850 • California admitted as a free state • New Mexico and Utah territories use popular sovereignty to decide the status of slavery • Stronger fugitive slave law • Slave trade ended in Washington D.C. • Border dispute between New Mexico and Texas resolved

  4. Kansas-Nebraska Act -1854 • Kansas and Nebraska territories created • No more 36 degree 30 minute line • Kansas and Nebraska territories will use popular sovereignty
