Karan • ppkaran@uky.edu • This course presents a wide-ranging introduction to the themes, concepts, and facts of human geography covering topics such as globalization, cultural landscapes, sustainable agriculture, political conflict, cities, and urbanization. • The course is self-directed, and entails textbook and map reading, web assignments, short videos, and a series of short quizzes. • You can work at your own pace, and you will be able to chat online with others taking the course if you like. • Fulfills the Gen Ed Social Science Inquiry requirement Professor Rich Schein 1441 Patterson Office Tower schein@uky.edu • Throughout history humankind has suffered from pandemics - diseases that periodically spread around the world and kill hundreds of millions of people. Historically important diseases include the Plague, Smallpox, and Influenza. Recently, emerging and re-emerging diseases such as HIV/AIDS, SARS, and H1N1 are evidence that we have not conquered infectious and contagious diseases. • GEO 261 focuses on agents that cause major diseases, how diseases develop, how our immune system attempts to protect us, and the human and economic impacts of diseases. • Specific attention is directed toward the role that globalization has played in enabling the diffusion of these new and re-emerging diseases across the world. • Fulfills the Gen Ed Global Dynamics requirement Professor Gary W.
