Urban growth in Melbourne • Read page 116 & 117 ‘New Perspectives’ to be introduced to urban environments in Australia. • Illustrate the urban growth of Melbourne by completing a detailed map of the urban growth of Melbourne in 4 sections as follows: • Trace the map of Melbourne on page 114 of Geography 2, drawing on only the land, major roads, rivers and suburb names. • Trace the urban growth until1919 • Trace the urban growth between 1920 and 1960. • Trace the urban growth after 1960.

  5. Urban growth in Melbourne • Identify the physical factors that have affected the growth and shape of Melbourne. • Describe the pattern of growth for each of the following time frames. Include distances and directions from the CBD: a) Up to 1919 b) 1920 – 1960 c) After 1960 • Give possible reasons for the rate of growth that occurred in each time frame. • For each time frame, identify new suburbs that were established during the period.

The Aboriginal population in Melbourne is now very low. Despite this, which areas of Melbourne are home to the largest populations of Aborigines? 7. a) The Age pyramid for Melbourne shows significant predictions for the next 20 years. Compare the 1971 results to the 2031 predictions by describing both pyramids. b) Give reasons for the dramatic changes that are predicted to occur by 2031.

  7. Multicultural Melbourne Melbourne is well known for its multicultural living environment. There is a long history of diverse migration to this region of the world. Please read ‘Social Factors’ on page 118 of New Perspectives and look at Figure 2.3.5. Visit the Immigration museum website to discover the pathways that led to a Multicultural Melbourne. The website is listed below. http://museumvictoria.com.au/origins/ Complete an ‘Immigration Profile’ on a country of your choice. Everyone must choose a different country of origin. Use MS Word or Publisher. See the next slide for instructions

Immigrant communities • Choose one of the most dominant immigrant communities in Victoria. • Navigate the immigration origins website and construct an immigrant community profile including the following information: • A summary of immigration history for the country • A photograph of immigrant life in Victoria • Graphs for - Population Age (1976 and 2006) Occupation Religion Language For each graph, explain what the statistics tell us about the immigrant community. For ‘Age’ graphs, compare statistics and suggest how the difference in results could impact in immigrant life in Victoria. 3. Outline the issues/problems that immigrants may face in migrating to Australia (e.g. Language barriers, racism, prejudice) 4. Outline some of the positive influences that this migrant community has contributed to Australia
