Hitler became Chancellor in 1933. President Hindenburg appointed him as Hitler was the leader of the largest party in the Reichstag and all the other leading politicians who had tried to do it had been too weak and/or received votes of no confidence. However, he didn’t have complete control yet – he needed to get rid of the threat of the Communists and remove Hindenburg who was more powerful than him. Another of his main problems was from within the Nazi party itself. The SA had become too powerful – they were the thugs of the party who roamed the streets beating up Communists. They seemed to do whatever they liked. Their leader Rohm was also a rival of Hitler’s. He was also a homosexual which didn’t support Nazi ideology. Hitler also had problems from the left of the Nazi party led by GregorStrasser who wanted to give more to the workers and trade unions. The army and traditionalists were also angry at how the SA could do whatever they liked – the traditionalists in the Weimar Germany had only just lifted a ban on the SA. Why was Hitler so worried about the SA? Why was he so worried about the left?

By August 1934 Hitler subjugated the SA, killed Rohm and the left of the party. He had also managed to imprison all Communists after he blamed them for burning down the Reichstag, something which the Nazis probably did. The Nazis also got the Enabling Act passed, which meant they could make any law they wanted to, using the excuse that they needed to control the Communists. Finally, Hindenburg died. Hitler was now called Fuhrer, meaning leader, and was in complete control of Germany.
