  17. Paradigm ! Old: I can use my desk phone to talk, talk, or talk. New: With UC, you can see presence, instant message, voice call, video call, share a desktop, etc. ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  18. Paradigm ! Old: I can keep trying to call people until I reach them (or I can keep monitoring a busy indicator). New: Tag user(s) for status change. ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  19. Paradigm ! Old: I have a button on a physical phone that I can press to call a buddy. New: Using your UC contact list, you can have more buddies & you can decide who your buddies are—not the PBX guy that set your desk phone up 5 years ago. ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  20. Paradigm ! Old: Look at a number on my computer screen, & dial it on my desk phone. New: Just click on a contact’s name (or a number you looked up on the web) & your UC client will dial it. ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  21. Paradigm ! Old: I notice my message-waiting indicator & listen to voicemail on my phone. New: Voicemail is sent to your email inbox, at which point you can listen to it on your computer and/or read a transcribed version (“unified messaging”). ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  22. Paradigm ! Old: Keep trying to call different folks from a specific group until I finally reach one of them (or give up). New: Look at a functional group, find a green presence bubble, & instantly chat (or talk). ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  23. Paradigm ! Old: Leverage caller ID to decide whether or not to answer my phone. New: Program custom call-handling via a self-serve portal. Route certain VIPs to your cell, base routes on your calendar, “blocklist” certain people, & generally specify “follow-me” behavior as you desire. ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  24. Paradigm ! Old: Voice is critical, because it’s how I reach 9-1-1. New: Decouple the voice function that’s part of the UC business suite from emergency communication. ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  25. Paradigm ! Old: Vendor-specific, proprietary solutions that lock you in to a single vendor’s costs/timelines/ideals. New: Open-source, open-standard, interoperability. ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  26. Paradigm ! Old: Relying on a vendor for support (assuming they’re still in business). New: Relying on a technical community for support. ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  27. Paradigm ! Old: I pay the telecom dept. / my local telephony provider to move my phone. New: Moving to another desk/room/building/campus? Unplug your phone & plug it in at your new location. (Of course, your softphone would go with you too, on any number of platforms.) Cost savings & more service flexibility! ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  28. Communication  Collaboration ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  29. The Promise of an Amazing Future • Calendar- & activity-based presence • Federation • Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC) • Geographic Information System (GIS) • Global Positioning System (GPS) • Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) • Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) • Telepresence • And more (ultimately resulting in complete customization as specified by the end-user, & complete flexibility & interoperability)! ACTI-CCM at EDUCAUSE Annual Conference 2012

  30. Panel Discussion • Doug Carlson, Associate Vice President, Communications & Computing Services (NYU) • Richard Hach, Associate Director, Network Administration, Special Projects & Initiatives (Virginia Tech) • Tim Lance, President & Board Chair (NYSERNet, Inc.)
