  1. Helpdesk Answers WRITE IT RIGHT

  2. Overview • HDA Anatomy • Author Instructions • How to Organize the HDA • Final Checklist

  3. Get Ready: Revisit the HDA Anatomy. • Clinical Question. • Evidence Based Answer(35-75 words, with SORT grade.) • Evidence Summary(250-350 words.) • References(100-200 words, with LOEs.) • Continuing Medical Education Question(Multiple choice. Not included in word count.) The ideal word count is 500, including references. HDAs should run no more than 600 words – a small table counts for approximately 100 words.

  4. Get Set: Re-Read HDA Author Instructions. • Identify the question. Translate to PICO. • Conduct literature search using PICO terms. • Grade the available evidence using LOEs. • Synthesize the evidence. Refine statistics so they are ‘user friendly’. • Organize the flow of information (begin with the best evidence, then supporting evidence.) • Now it is time to write!

  5. GO – Get Organized Choose the tool that works for you: • Evidence Table. • Brief Paragraph Summarizing Each Study. • Critical Appraisal Worksheet. • Formal Outline.

  6. Example: Treatment Question EVIDENCE TABLE What: Tabular description of the studies. Compare studies by characteristics. Why: Prevent errors of interpretation. Increase clarity of analysis. Plan a statistical analysis.

  7. For each study*, prepare a brief summary paragraph withthe PICO and relevance to your question. Organize these paragraphs from strongest evidence to least strong. Draft your EB Answer based on these paragraphs. * If more than 3-5 references or lots of data, prepare a table comparing interventions and outcomes. Evidence Summaries What:Brief summaries of the key information in each study. Why:Double check on your understanding and reveals study weaknesses and strengths.

  8. Critical Appraisal Worksheet What: Worksheets structured by question type. Why: To make sure you have the information needed to write your HDA! http://www.mclibrary.duke.edu/subject/ebm/appraising/therapy_worksheet.pdf

  9. HDA: Writing it right • Write the narrative Evidence Summary first. • Be concise. Be objective. No background. • Write/refine the Evidence-Based Answer to your clinical question based on the Evidence Summary. • Be brief. Succinct. No framing required.
