  1. Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram Characteristics of Stars

  2. Review of Life Cycle of Stars: • What is the first stage of star formation called? • Explain the process responsible for the creation of energy in a star? • What force pulls the star together, keeps the star together and eventually collapses the star? • What is the last stage of a life for a small size star? • What are the two options for the last stage of life for a large size star?

  3. What is an H-R Diagram? • A graph of the absolute magnitude of stars (luminosity or brightness) plotted against their surface temperature or color, used in the study of stellar evolution.

  4. Every Star is Different! • All the stars in the night sky are different • Brightness: • Tells us how luminous the star is, i.e. How much energy is being produced in the core • Color: • Tells us the surface temperature of the star

  5. Measuring the Temperature • The temperature of a star is indicated by its color • Blue stars are hot, and red stars are cold Red star Yellow star Blue star 3,000 K 5,000 K 10,000 K
