The Crusades e. Describe the impact of the Crusades on both the Islamic World and Europe.
What are the Crusades? • The age of Faith inspired these wars of conquest. • Emperor of Byzantine Empire asked the for help against Muslim Turks. • The Muslim Turks were threatening to conquer his capital in Constantinople. • Urban II issued the call of a “holy war” called a crusade: to gain control of the Holy Land.
What was the Goal of the Crusades? • Economic Goals: • Merchants profited by making loans to finance the journey. • Lease ships for a hefty fee to transport armies over the Mediterranean Sea. • Trying to win control of key trade routes to India. • Inheritance of Land: Eldest sons would inherit their fathers property.
Goals Continued • Social goals: • Knights threatening the peace of the kingdoms, as well as church property. • Crusades brought an opportunity to get rid of quarrelsome knights who fought each other.
Political goals with religious motives • Muslims controlled Palestine(The Holy Land) and threatened Constantinople. • Byzantine Emperor appealed to Christians to stop Muslim Attacks. • Pope wanted to reclaim Palestine to reunite the split Christendom.
1st and 2nd Crusade • Pope Urban call brought outpouring of religious feeling and support. • Those who died in Crusade were assured of a place in heaven(according to the Pope). • “God wills it”- knights wore red crosses sewn on tunics worn over their armor. • Knew nothing of the Geography, climate, or culture of the “Holy Land”.
Nobles argued among themselves and couldn’t agree on a leader. • No strategy to capture Jerusalem. • Crusader states became vulnerable to Muslim counterattack. • In the 2nd Crusade, Saladin(Muslim leader) captured Jerusalem.
Third Crusade • Led by Richard the Lion Heart: • Richard and Saladin were both brilliant warriors. • After many years the two formed a truce. • Jerusalem remained under Muslim control and Christian pilgrims could freely visit the Holy city.
Children’s Crusade • 1212 , 1000’s of children set out to conquer Jerusalem. • Armed with only the belief that God would give them Jerusalem. • Many died from cold and starvation • Rest died at sea or were sold to slavery.
Spanish Crusade • Muslims controlled most of spain • Reconquista: effort to drive the Muslims out of Spain. • Inquisition: Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand's plan to unify Spain under Christianity
Effects of the Crusades • Power of the Church • Merchants expanded trade between Europe and Southeast Asia. Benefitting Christians/Muslims • Trading goods: Spices, fruits, and cloth. • Lessoned the power of the Pope. • For Muslims, Intolerance/prejudice displayed by Christians in the Holy Land left behind a legacy of bitterness and hatred.
