FW 545 Ecological Restoration Jeff Baker, Cameron Gumbert, Anna Maher, Lance Wyss • Context • Site: • Located east of the Willamette River between Corvallis and Albany, south of Bowers Rock State Park. • - ≈ 81 hectares half of which is within the Willamette River floodplain. • -Part of Little Willamette runs along NW corner • Land Use: • -Rust family owned since 1930’s • -Majority in agriculture with a few remnant native plant communities • Easement : • Landowner, Greenbelt Land Trust, ODFW, and BPA to secure a conservation easement in 2009. Goals -Conserve and restore ecological processes for a diversity of habitat types -Establish connectivity and interaction of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems - Encourage surrounding landowner participation in future restoration efforts Measures of Success -Plant community composition similar to reference habitats, with limited cover of invasive species. -Diversity or species composition of fish, amphibian, birds, and invertebrates. Presence or use by Oregon Conservation Strategy species. -Invasive plant species are only limited components of plant communities. Historic Time Line 1851 Restoring Willamette River Gallery Forest and Terrace Prairie: the Rust Family Farm • Restorative Activities Timeframe • Phase I (first 2 years): • Minimal farm use reduction • Gallery forest plantings to sq.-off crop fields in zone A, B • Remove berms in zone A • Control invasive species • Educate & inform surrounding land owners through participation and group tours • Phase II (3 to 5+ years) • Removal of agriculture • Re-contouring of ditches in wet prairie areas • Establishment of native vegetation types • Monitoring of salmonid entrapment • Phase III (6 to 15+ years) • Invasive species control • Stand maintenance • Plant understory shrubs in gallery forests • Restore historical fire regime 1936 2005 Expected Outcomes - Improve Little Willamette side channel hydrology for future connectivity to mainstem - Functional Willamette River gallery forest, oak savanna, wet and dry prairies, and ephemeral wetland habitats supporting diverse biotic communities - Resilient communities for future uncertainties (climate change, species invasion)
