VICTORIA – LABOUR MARKET INFORMATION • Second largest workforce – 2.5 million workers • Employment has grown by 10% in the last 5 years • Workforce is ageing – 37% of workers aged 45 yrs or older • 29% of workers are employed part time • Largest employing industries – Retail, Manufacturing and Property & Business Services

  6. Services Jobs in the Service Industry include Retail This means helping customers and giving advice to them on the products they are purchasing. Retail assistants are trained to know about the products they sell. Places where you may work include: • McDonalds • Coles • Telstra • Commonwealth Bank • Boost Juice

  7. Hospitality The jobs in this industry include a Chef or a Cook. A Chef or Cook prepares and cooks meals in Restaurants, Cafés, Pubs and some Bars. They are highly trained. Other Jobs include waiting and customer service.

  8. Building & Construction The job that is shown here is a Carpenter. A carpenter builds and installs the foundation of a house. They install the doors, windows and the framing of homes and buildings.

  9. Manufacturing This job is in Automotive Engineering. An Automotive Engineer makes, works and fixes motor vehicles. They are also highly qualified.

  11. Administration Jobs in this Industry include being a Customer Service officer or an Administrative Assistant. A worker in this area may work on a computer, file important and confidential information, make and answer telephone calls.   12. Health This is a job where workers help and care for other people. Jobs in this Industry include a Nurse A Nurse can assist a Doctor. They also help Patients with small problems. A male or a female can become a nurse. Places where you may work include: • Hospital • Medical Clinic.

Lawyer • Lawyers provide advice, write documents and conduct negotiations on legal matters, and may represent clients in court and tribunal proceedings. • Lawyers are described as solicitors or barristers, according to the work they do. • provide legal advice and draft legal documents • conduct negotiations • appear in courts and tribunal hearings on behalf of clients • research statutes and previous court decisions • interview clients and recommend appropriate legal actions

  15. Lawyer Personal Requirements: • good oral and written communication skills • able to understand, analyse and use facts quickly and logically • able to work under pressure and deal with a variety of people • integrity and good character.

  16. Lawyer - Pathway . To become a lawyer you usually have to complete a law degree at university. To get into these courses you usually need to pass your VCE with English. The various universities have different prerequisites and have flexible entry requirements or offer external study.4 to 5 years full time study or equivalent Students are often advised to undertake a combined degree course that leads to two degrees (double degree). The prerequisite subjects required for entry into these combined courses also depend on the non-law component of the combined course. It is a large occupation with good employment prospects.

Construction • Construction workers assist tradespeople on building and construction sites by doing a range of manual labouring jobs. • A construction worker may perform the following tasks: • unload, carry and stack building materials and place tools and equipment in position • dig trenches using hand tools, or jackhammers to break up rock and concrete, so that footings and services can be laid • place and compact filling and quarry materials • help to erect and dismantle scaffolding (subject to certification in some states and territories), ramps, catwalks, barricades and warning lights • mix, pour and spread concrete • use wheelbarrows to remove rubble and rubbish from building sites • clean surfaces for painters.

  21. Construction Worker • Personal Requirements: • physically fit • enjoy practical and outdoor work • able to work as part of a team • able to work at a constant pace • able to follow precise directions.

  22. Construction Worker - Pathway • Also known as a Builders Labourer and Labourer. • You can work as a construction worker without formal qualifications. You will probably get some informal training on the job. You can also become a construction worker through an apprenticeship in General Construction. Once you are employed, you may be able to develop, and have recognized, additional skills under the General Construction Training Package that will expand your career opportunities within this industry. • Construction workers work for large construction firms and smaller building subcontractors. They mainly work on the construction of offices, hotels, factories, tourist resorts, hospitals and schools.

Sales Assistant • Sales assistants sell goods to customers in retail and wholesale establishments. • Sales assistants may perform the following tasks: • advise customers on the location, selection, price, delivery, use and care of goods available from the store, with the aim of encouraging them to buy and to return to buy in the future • operate cash registers and accept payment, or prepare finance arrangements (e.g. invoices and contracts)

Sales Assistant (Continued) • take special orders for items not currently in stock, or not normally stocked, and notify customers when the items have arrived • package goods for customers and arrange delivery • price, stack and display items for sale, and keep the store tidy and attractive • be aware of health, safety and welfare issues and practices • participate in stocktaking (counting and describing the goods in stock)

  27. Sales Assistant • Personal Requirements: • enjoy working with people • a helpful, courteous manner • neat personal appearance • good communication skills • able to deal accurately with money • motivation and drive • no skin disorders if working with food • willing to work as part of a team.

  28. Sales Assistant - Pathway • You can work as a sales assistant without formal qualifications. You will probably get some informal training on the job. Once you are employed , you may be able to develop, and have recognized, additional skills under the Retail Training Package. • Most companies do not advertise their vacancies, firms have to be contacted directly.

Personal Care Worker • Personal care workers assist in caring for patients in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and institutions for the aged or disabled. • Personal care workers may perform the following tasks: • assist nursing staff to lift and turn bedridden patients • help to shower, bathe and shave patients while supervised by a registered nurse • assist clients with dressing and eating • help clients to move around and communicate • apply practical intervention procedures for dementia or behavioural problems

Personal Care Worker (Continued) • make sure that an adequate supply of clean clothing and linen is available for the client and that soiled items are removed and cleaned • observe and report any changes in the client's condition or any complaints about care to a supervisor • assist with rehabilitation exercises and basic treatment and medications • perform basic procedures such as taking blood pressure and applying and changing dressings • accompany patients who are ready for discharge to the central waiting area.

  34. Personal Care Worker - Pathway • You can work as a personal care worker without formal qualifications. You will probably get some informal training on the job. However, entry to this occupation may be improved if you have qualifications. • Personal care workers are employed in hospitals, nursing homes, institutions for the aged and disabled, or in peoples homes. Job opportunities are growing with the ageing population.

  42. And remember, not everyone needs to be a doctor, lawyer or pilot!! There are many good jobs in Australia that pay well. Encourage yourself & your children to follow a REALISTIC path to success.

  43. The path of life is never straight for anyone. The best pathway in education is the one which starts from where YOU are NOW and leads you to somewhere BETTER. The best pathway for you or your child may be different from that of someone born in Australia. The best pathway for you or your child may also be different from the pathway of other members of your community. HOWEVER, the most important thing is reaching your destination successfully: and maybe the Winding Pathway will help you achieve this.
