Main Symptoms Early symptoms are very similar to those of aging loss of concentration forgetfulness unexplained weight loss Motor problems (such as some difficulties walking) Over time patient loses capability of understanding the meaning of words Sensory problems, such as hearing loss and a decline in reading ability Loss of coordination in a more advanced stage

  3. Frequency of Occurrence Alzheimer's disease affects some 4 million Americans today, and as the population ages, experts predict that it may strike as many as 8 to 10 million by the year 2020

  4. Mode of Inheritance • Alzheimer's is an autosomal dominant gene Typical Genotype Alzheimer’s is a rare disease and is therefore most commonly heterozygous

Genes Involved The amyloid precursor protein (APP), Presenilin I and Presenilin II are the main genes thought to be involved APP encodes the beta amyloid protein, which is accumulated at abnormal rates in the brain PSI and PSII genes are involved in the signal processes within and between cells Chromosome 1 and 14 are the two chromosomes involved
