  1. 3.2 Multiplication Property of Equality (MPE)

  2. Definition • Coefficient: numeric factor that is being multiplied by the variable. Example: -3x -3 ½ y ½

  3. The Multiplication Property of Equality For all rational numbers a, b , and c Ifa = b, thenac = bc • You can multiply the same number by both sides. • When you multiply by the reciprocal it is the same as dividing.

  4. To solve an equation like 8x = 96 • Goal: need to isolate the variable on one side of the equal sign. • How: do the opposite operation of what is being done to the variable. • Why: by doing the opposite operation it will make the coefficient of x “1”. • Rule: whatever you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other.

  5. Solve: 5x = 30 Show your work exactly like this tonight

  6. Solve: -7x = 49

  7. Solve: -12x = -8 Always remember to reduce the fractions!!

  8. Solve:

  9. To solve an equation like: Multiply both sides of the equation by the reciprocal of the coefficient

  10. Solve: If a negative sign is on the outside of a fraction put it in the numerator.

  11. Solve:

  12. Solve:

  13. If a variable does not have a coefficient put 1 in front of it. Solve:
