The Multiplication Property of EqualityRule: For all rational numbers a, b , and c Ifa = b, thenac = bc Another version of the rule: If a=b, then Which is the same as: If a=b, then
To solve an equation like 8x = 96 • Goal: need to isolate the variable on one side of the equal sign. • How: do the opposite operation of what is being done to the variable. • Why: by doing the opposite operation it will make the coefficient of x “1”. • Rule: whatever you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other.
Example 2:Solve: -12x = -8 Always remember to reduce the fractions!!
Example 3: Solve: Multiply both sides of the equation by the reciprocal of the coefficient
Ex 4: If a negative sign is on the outside of a fraction put it in the numerator.
If a variable does not have a coefficient put 1 in front of it. Ex 6:
Example 9: Penny bought a 12-bottle case of juice on sale for $6.72. What was the price of each bottle? Let j= the cost of one juice bottle
