  3. Village Life • Peasants • Manor economy was based on farming & self-sufficiency • 3 classes of peasants • Freemen: rented or owned land • Serfs: a peasant who was bound to the land • Slaves: could not leave their manors

  4. Growing Trade • New towns focused on trade • Trade Fairs: trade became the most important economic activity in a medieval town

  5. Growing Trade • Rise of the Middle Class • Organized into guilds (protected the interests of the people of the same occupation) • Money soon replaced land as a source of wealth • Corporations developed • Education needed for empire’s survival

  6. Literature • Knights • Chivalry: a code of conduct adopted by knights in the middle ages • Coat of Arms: graphic symbol that identified him
