  2. Feudalism Governs Knights and Nobles • Nobles had to defend their land from invaders. • As a result Noble power grew • Although these nobles remained loyal to the king, they ruled their land as independent territories.

  3. Knights and Land • Nobles needed soldiers to protect their lands. • Knights were warriors who fought on horseback • Peasants worked on the land that the knights protected. • Everyone was responsible to the person below and above them. • This is known as a Feudal System.

  4. A Lord’s Duties • A lord was responsible to calling for his vassals in times of need. • If a lord failed to do what he was supposed to do, his vassal could break all ties with him. • Lords build castles to help defend during attacks

  5. A Vassal’s Duties • A vassal was required to fight when needed • Expected to give money to his lord for certain reasons • Provide shelter and food when his lord came to visit • If a vassal gained enough land, he could also become a lord

  6. Feudalism Spreads • Feudalism was first created by the Franks • As Frankish knights moved they spread the idea of Feudalism around Europe • Under William the Conqueror, feudalism spread into England

Towns and Trade Grows • Europe’s population increased as a result of more food (new technology in food production helped) • As the population grew so too did trade. • The chance to make more money in trade lead people to leave their farms to go trade in the cities. • The growth of trade eventually led to the decline of feudalism.

  9. Section 4Feudal Societies • Japan and Europe had similar feudal systems • Lords and Vassals of Europe were similar to the Daimyo of the Islands of Japan • Land was given by the King (Europe) and the emperor (Japan) • Peasants worked the land to produce food

  10. Knights and Samurai • The land owners needed protection and hired in Japan, samurai and in Europe, knights. Both were responsible to their lord and held at a high standard. • The main difference between the two were their religion and their type of armor
