11. New Initiatives Dean Patricia White was named the most influential woman in legal education by the National Jurist in 2013. Dean White has started an array of new and innovative initiatives during her leadership. Highlights include: More Joint Degrees Seven additional Joint Degree Programs have been approved. Externship in D.C. with Professor Copeland Career Development Office Miami Law’s Career Development Office has ten advisors with law degrees who assist students in navigating the national and local job market. More Hands-On Training • A greatly expanded externship program. • Legal Communication and Research Skills course is taught by full-time instructors who guide students in conducting sophisticated legal analysis, and drafting legal documents. • Litigation Specialization Certificate Program for those interested in being a litigator/trial lawyer. International ExchangeOfferings: New study abroad options being offered in Versailles, France; Berlin and Hamburg, Germany; Zurich, Switzerland; Haifa, Israel; Dublin, Ireland; Spain; China; Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Innovative ProgramsMiami Law boasts LawWithoutWalls™ and The Idea of the Hospital. 13. Miami Law’s New Course Offerings Taught by Experts from Across the Country and Internationally. Examples include: • Corporate Skills for New Lawyers Areas covered by the course will include: - MBA Essentials for Lawyers – Business Strategy; Competitive Theories- How do clients choose a lawyer? What criteria do they use and how do you match them?- What clients want in service delivery – the view from the General Counsel. - Building a powerful network of contacts and developing a personal brand. • Representing the Professional Athlete This course is taught by Professor Peter Carfagna who serves as Senior Counsel for Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP, in Cleveland, one of the preeminent Sports Law firms in the country. He has also served as Chief Legal Officer & General Counsel of International Management Group (IMG) and was Senior Partner at Jones Day LLP. Areas covered by the course will include: - Problems an agent/attorney confronts when helping an athlete “go pro.” From there, the class discusses the agent’s fiduciary duty to his client and proceed to discuss some of the more important legal doctrines relating to the athlete-representation profession, involving intellectual property law, labor law, and contract law. • Compliance E-lliance This all-­virtual synchronous course will provide students with an overview of the current and evolving compliance landscape and emerging best practices both within the United States and Germany. • LWOW-X (www.lawwithoutwalls.org) Over a 3-month period, LWOW X teams up students from 4 law and business schools around the world—Miami Law, University of Montreal, University College London, and IE University—with academic, lawyer, and entrepreneur mentors to develop business plans that tackle the main problems facing legal education and practice today.

14. Guest Speakers Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy • Justice Kennedy spoke at length about the Framers of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the separation of powers and the concept of checks and balances. Richard Susskind, Authority on the Transformation of Legal Practice and Services • Susskind, Order of the British Empire, is an author, speaker, and independent advisor to major professional firms and to national governments. His main area of expertise is the future of professional service and, in particular, the way in which IT and the Internet are changing the work of lawyers. He has worked on legal technology for over 30 years. His latest book, is entitled Tomorrow's Lawyers (2013). Ambassador John Bolton • Former Ambassador John Bolton delivered a lecture on "America in the World: The Obama View“ at Miami. Ambassador Bolton discussed sovereignty and American exceptionalism.
