Safe Surrender vs. Adoption Adoption is the best option for a parent who is unable to care for a child. Adoption allows the child’s parents to: • Participate in the adoption process • Share important medical information related to their child • Select a religion for their child • Decide whether or not they want to maintain contact with the child and adoptive parents
Adoption For additional information about adoption, please call the Los Angeles County Adoption Hotline at: (888) 811-1121
Social and Psychological Aspects of Child Abandonment While parents who abandon or safely surrender their children do not fit a general profile, some common characteristics of these individuals include: • Denial/Concealment of pregnancy • Lack of a support system for the mother • Fear of “the system” • Fear that friends and relatives will find out • Lack of prenatal care • Lack of typical pregnancy symptoms • Childbirth occurs outside of the hospital
Assisting a Woman Who Conceals Her Pregnancy What can you do: • Ask her if she is pregnant • Acknowledge the pregnancy in a non-judgmental manner • Help her determine her options • Assist her in finding prenatal health care • Provide love and emotional support
