The Government supplied a militias called the Janjaweed to fight against the uprisings. They supplied them with weapons, ammunition and armor. The people are under the military dictatorship with a pro-government parliament. The United States of America has declared the conflict in Darfur to be genocide. March 2005 – The United Nations Security Council began to take steps: - Authorized Sanctions to be imposed on individuals responsible for violating international law. - They referred the situation in Darfur to the new ICC. (International Criminal Court)
Issues- Refugees • Hot Conditions • Little Shelter • Limited Supplies of Food • Lack of Safety • Lack of Medicine • Lack of Water • Emotional Crisis
Media Coverage • The media in Darfur is obviously censored and controlled by the government. • Some of the rather “sensitive” information and media footages cannot be broadcasted on international news channels because of the government is afraid of being prosecuted by the UN. • Most News Channels such as: CNN and BBC are not classifying it under the name genocide. It is called “The Humanitarian Conflict in Darfur”.
International Responses • The United States of America was the country to declare the situation in Darfur to be genocide. • Australia and other countries send aid to the people in Sudan. • The United Nations authorized sanctions to be imposed on individuals responsible for violating international law. • Human Right groups also send aid and raised awareness.
The Future • The united nations will create a resolution to settle the situation in the Darfur. • I think the optimal solution would be for the country to split and have it’s own separate governments.
