  3. Colossians 3:5-8 5Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.

  4. Understanding Anger • Anger: a strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure, or hostility. • The root of anger is what we worship. • The fruit of anger is destruction.

  5. Righteous Anger • Negative emotion harnessed to eradicate the sin and evil that hinder the worship of God. • God’s Anger – Col. 3:6 & Eph. 5:6 • Jesus Anger – John 2:14-17 • William Wilberforce – Parliament

  6. Unrighteous Anger • Negative emotion harnessed to eradicate anything or anyone that hinders the worship of an idol (or self). • James 4:1-4 Getting to the root. • Matthew 5:21-26 The root is deadly. • Genesis 4:1-8 Ignoring the root.

  7. Gospel Hope • The Gospel must change how you think (Romans 12:1-2). • Meditate on God’s wrath (Romans 2:4). • How does meditating on God’s wrath kill my wrath?!?

  8. Gospel Hope • Meditating on God’s Wrath… • Not in fearful expectation of your condemnation or future wrath… • But in the stunned amazement that God’s wrath has already been satisfied in Christ (Rom 2:4, 3:25, Heb. 2:17, 1 John 2:1-2, 4:10).

  9. Gospel Response • Put Off (Confess/Repent/Forsake) • Believe the Gospel. • Own your anger. • Let HS reveal source – James 4 • Confess to God – 1 John 1:9 • Confess to others – James 5:16

  10. Gospel Response • Put on Attitudes/Actions Col 3:12-17 • Attitudes: compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. • Actions: forgiveness and loving actions. • Let the peace of Christ rule.
