State law requirements regarding academic 4 year plans • NDCC 15.1-21-18.2 • At least once during the seventh or eighth grade year, each school district shall arrange for students to participate in either an individual consultative process or a nine-week course, for the purpose of discussing the results of their career interest inventory, selecting high school courses appropriate to their educational pursuits and career interests, and developing individual high school education plans.

5. Mandan High school graduation requirements: • Starting with the class of 2017 students will need 23 credits (or units) to graduate from Mandan High School. • What is a credit? • How do students receive credits? • How many chances do students get to receive a credit?

6. How does a student get to 23 credits? • English Credits • ( 4 Credits: English I, II, III, English Literature and English Elective) • Math Credits • (3 Credits: No Specific Required Classes) • Science Credits • (3 Credits: Physical Science, Biology, Science Elective) • Social Studies Credits • (3 Credits: World History- Modern Era, POD I, US History, POD 2, Social Studies Elective) • Physical Education Credits • (2 Credits: Swim I/II, Sophomore P.E., P.E. Elective) • Elective Credits • ( 8 Credits: Any Choice of Student)

7. English / Social Studies credits: • 4 Units of English are required • English I, English II, English III, ½ unit of literature, and ½ unit English elective • AP English, British Lit., Creative Writing, Journalism I and II, Modern Lit, Speech, Technical Writing, and World Lit. • 3 Units of Social Studies are required • Required: ½ unit of World History II, ½ unit of POD 1, 1 unit of US History, ½ unit of POD 2, and ½ unit of a social studies elective • Social Studies Electives: Geography, Current Issues, World History I, Sociology, Psychology, International Relations

8. Math / science credits: • 3 units of Math • Mandan High School does not require any 3 specific Math classes to be taken • Keep in mind Math is a sequential subject • General Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Probability and Statistics, Pre-Calculus, Math Applications I/II • (North Dakota Public University Admissions require 3 units of math, which include Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II) • 3 units of Science • Physical Science and Biology are required (by the state) • General Science, Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, Ecology, Geology, Human Anatomy, Honors Human Anatomy, Physics

9. Physical education / elective credits • 2 Units of Physical Education are required: each P.E. class is worth a ½ credit • P.E. credits must include swimming and sophomore P.E. • P.E. Electives: Advanced Aquatics, Lifeguard Training, Team Sports, Lifetime Sports, Weight Training • Other required credits include: ¼ credit of Career Management and ¼ credit of Health (both courses are 9 weeks each) • Elective credits: Any class of a student’s choice that is taken for credit (This does not include a study hall or tutor period) • Students will need a minimum of 8 elective credits

10. ND Scholarships • Total value of the scholarship is $6,000 with a payment of $750 per semester, for a total annual payment of $1500. Students not attending a college or university in the fall may defer payment until the time of attendance. However, the award must be used within six years of high school graduation. • Scholarships are automatically renewed, provided the student is enrolled full time (12 credits each semester the first year, and 15 credits each semester thereafter). Students must maintain a 2.75 GPA in college.

North Dakota academic scholarship • ND resident graduating from a ND high school who has satisfied state diploma requirements • Complete 1 unit of Algebra II • Complete 1 unit of math for which Algebra II is a prerequisite • Complete 2 units of the same foreign language, Native American language, or sign language, or CTE from a coordinated plan of study • Complete 1 additional unit of fine arts, CTE, or foreign, Native American, or sign language • Earn no lower than a “C” on any unit required for the diploma and the scholarship • Earn a cumulative GPA of at least a “B” which equals a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale • Earn a 24 or higher on the ACT assessment • Complete 1 unit of AP course and exam or ½ unit of a dual credit course • $6,000 FREE money  but must attend a ND college or university and can only apply for one or the other

12. North Dakota Career and technical education scholarship • ND resident graduating from a ND high school who has satisfied state diploma requirements • Complete 1 unit of Algebra II and 2 other units of Math • Complete 2 units of a CTE coordinated plan of study • Complete 1 unit selected from Foreign Language, Native American Language, American Sign Language, Fine Arts, or CTE • Complete 5 additional units of which 2 must be in CTE • Earn no lower than a “C” on any unit required for the diploma and the scholarship • Earn a cumulative GPA of at least a “B” which equals a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale • Earn a 24 or higher on the ACT assessment or three 5’s on the WorkKeys assessment • $6,000 FREE money  but must attend a ND college or university and can only apply for one or the other

13. What is the workkeys test? • WorkKeys Assessment: Offered at Bismarck State College Testing Center. Students must make an appointment to test at least 24 hours in advance. 224-5658 • Cost: $40.00 • Also offered at Mandan High School • Cost: $18.00 • Test Subject Areas: Applied Mathematics, Locating Information, and Reading for Information

Dual Credit Program: • MHS currently offers dual credit courses on our campus. • To enroll for a dual credit course the student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher at the time of registration. • Students, who take classes at MHS for dual credit, will receive a tuition reduction. If the teacher of record is an MHS teacher, textbooks for the course will be provided by the school. • ***NOTE*** Prior to enrollment it is the responsibility of the student to meet NDUS placement score requirements (ACT, PLAN, or compass test) in order to take any Math, English or Chemistry course.
