World War II On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor Pearl Harbor is on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu, which is slight west of Honolulu On the following day, the U.S. declare war on Japan Also on December 8, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called the day of attacks on Pearl Harbor “a date which will live in infamy”. The surprise Japanese attacks sparked racism and hatred towards the Japanese people Over 2000 people, both civilians and members of the Army and Navy were killed

Music of the 1940’s Perhaps the most popular group of the 1940’s was the Glenn Miller Orchestra The group formed in 1937 Several popular songs performed by the Orchestra were- Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood, Tuxedo Junction, and Chattanooga Choo Choo The Glenn Miller Orchestra was on the forefront of the “Big Band” music scene Instrumental pieces were very common from the not only the Glenn Miller Orchestra but other Big Band groups Big Band music, which is derivative of Jazz music, is unlike smaller Jazz groups, where improvisation is vital and common. Big Band musicians play from sheet music called charts primarily

The Glenn Miller Orchestra’s “Moonlight Serenade” I stand at your gate and the song that I sing is of moonlight.I stand and I wait for the touch of your hand in the June night.The roses are sighing a Moonlight Serenade.The stars are aglow and tonight how their light sets me dreaming.My love, do you know that your eyes are like stars brightly beaming?I bring you and sing you a Moonlight Serenade.Let us stray till break of dayin love's valley of dreams.Just you and I, a summer sky,a heavenly breeze kissing the trees.So don't let me wait, come to me tenderly in the June night.I stand at your gate and I sing you a song in the moonlight,a love song, my darling, a Moonlight Serenade. • Moonlight Serenade is widely considered The Glenn Miller Orchestra’s signature song • Like most other songs by the group, it is a piece led mostly by Clarinet and Saxophone • It is written in the key of C-minor • Moonlight Serenade is an excellent example of the “Big Band” sound of the 19040’s The lyrics to Moonlight Serenade

  7. New Inventions The 1940’s gave way to many inventions, such as the color television, the Jeep, Silly Putty, the frisbee, and many more. Though many tools and objects were invented, I chose the Slinky as a focal point. The Slinky • Invented in 1943 by husband and wife Richard and Betty James • The idea was put forth when Richard James was making Naval horsepower gauges, and a large coil fell to the floor. • The coil fell, and kept moving after hitting the ground. Due to this, Richard is quoted for saying, “I think I can make a toy out of this.” • “Slinky” is a Swedish word meaning sleek or sinuous, which describes the way it moves

New Medical Discoveries 1940 and on had quite the impact American medicine The world war caused massive amounts of research and development in the medicinal field Several discoveries/creations from the 1940’s are Penicillin and the Sulfonamides The DDT insecticide More efficient Vaccines More hygienic products Also, with the heightened accessibility of blood and plasma for transfusions, the Surgical field had many progressions

Clothing for Young Men One of the keys of fashion for men of the 1940’s was a limited range of fashionable colors The 1920’s fashion of bright colors had gone out of style, and the colors tended to be less exaggerated and more neutral Fedoras were a common hat for men of this time period to wear, with the rim tipped somewhat over one eye Drape cut suits were very common. With exaggerated shoulders, it made men have a slim, sleek look. These were often paired with casual, simple-colored pants

  10. American Political Leaders Franklin D. Roosevelt was the President of the United States at the time of World War II He was in office from March 4, 1933 to April 12, 1945 A large amount of historians believe Franklin D. Roosevelt to be one of the three best presidents in our nation’s history (the other two being George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln) He worked closely with Winston Churchill (United Kingdom) and Joseph Stalin (Soviet Union) to defeat Germany and Japan He died from a stroke on April 12, 1945, ending his presidency

  11. Other Political Leaders During World War II, the Prime Minister of Italy was Benito Mussolini. He believed in a Fascist government (having almost all the power in a central figure) Joseph Stalin was the General Secretary of the communist Soviet Union Adolph Hitler was in command as the Chancellor of Nazi Germany Hirohito was the Emperor of Japan, and Hideki Tōjōwas the general of Imperial Japan’s army. Hideki Tōjō is widely thought to be responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor

Preparatory Schools Preparatory Schools are typically more expensive compared to prices of public schools, and are usually focused on college and university preparation In A Separate Peace, the plot takes place at Devon School. It can be concluded that Devon School is the fictitious name for Philips Exeter Academy, which is where the book’s author John Knowles was schooled Philips Exeter Academy is a school still thriving today, and is a boarding school for grades 9-12 and also postgraduate students Students and alumni of the academy call themselves “Exonians”

The Draft Men from ages 21-35 could be drafted into the military, but the cutoff age was later reduced to 18 During World War II, patriotism played a major role in society War propaganda was common, and most young men were extremely excited to join the draft, and felt it was their job to do so The drafting was so popular to men, that there was a shortage of them, and many women had to work in factories Women working in factories also played a role in the propaganda aspect of the war

New Hampshire in the 1940’s During World War II, the economy of America was hit hard, due to members of the army needing enormous amounts of supplies The U.S. relied on many foreign countries for both buying and selling goods, and this could not be utilized if they were fighting against one another In the case of New Hampshire, the economy was hurt due to growing competition and lack of trade in the textile industry in the 1940’s New Hampshire’s economic depression, like the war itself, did not play a major role in the plot of A Separate Peace

More on 1940’s Culture Many famous baseball players left the sport to join the armed forces Mahatma Gandhi’s spiritual efforts were prevalent in this time period Swing music was the dominant genre of the 1940’s Though the 1940’s was dominated by war themes, the film industry still thrived A genre of film called Film Noir was prevalent in the 1940’s. It featured themes of crime and other dark matters Towards the end of 1940’s, the roots of Rock and Roll music began Baseball Player Joe Dimaggio Mahatma Gandhi
