  2. We are not sure of his birth date, because he was a slave. We think it was 1864 or early 1865. Early Life

  3. He hardly knew his mother or father. His mother got taken away only when he was an infant. His father was a slave too, but his father got killed around the time he was born. Family

  4. The Carvers wanted him to be educated, but he was black. So, all he had was a Webster's Spelling book. He went to African -American school when he was 12. Then, he went to Fort Scott and lived with a blacksmith. He graduated from high school. He tried to go to Highland University, but then they found out he was black, and didn't let him in. Education
